Artistic Director of Derby Theatre
on the 2017 East Meets West Symposium
East Meets West encourages collaboration between and within the East and West Midlands' independent theatre communities.
Mobilising everyone* working in the sector no matter what their role, we’re helping to create a more democratic, transparent and efficient community. The network revolves around this online Hub and is driven by peer-to-peer support. Our members are collaborators rather than competitors, working together to do their very best for audiences across the region.
The network is funded by Arts Council England, supported by venues throughout the Midlands, and curated by Birmingham-based theatre company Little Earthquake (aka Team Quake).
(* Psss! Yes we support artists, but it’s about time others working in the sector got a bit of love too, right?)
At the very heart of the East Meets West network is your community Hub. It's an online space (away from the distractions of other social media platforms) where you can meet and share knowledge with others working in the Midlands' independent theatre sector.
Whether you're an administrator, composer, designer, director, dramaturg, evaluator, facilitator, funder or fundraiser, general manager, marketer, musician, performer, producer, production or stage manager, programmer, technician, theatre-maker, writer… or anyone else who helps to get independent theatre in front of audiences, this hub is yours.
It's free to join, and entirely private. Only other members of the network can see your profile and posts. You can access the hub on the web, and there's also an App for iOS and Android.
We believe a community thrives because of the individuals within it and their personal relationships with one another. We therefore encourage you to register as yourself rather than your organisation. You'll have plenty of opportunities to talk about your organisation on your profile.

The Hub harnesses the power of Mighty Networks to create a fun and easy-to-use experience.
HOME IS WHERE THE ACTIVITY FEED IS...
Your activity feed is the heartbeat of the Hub and responds dynamically to how you're interacting with other members, posts and topics. That means you'll always see the most relevant information first. It's time to take the working out of networking!
Streamline your activity feed through filtering. Want to see everything that's happening across the hub? Someone's hungry! Want to see only the topics and members you are following? Click on the personal feed filter. Perhaps you only want to see posts by your lovely hosts? Did we ever tell you that you're our favourite?
SEARCHING FOR YOUR SECTOR SOULMATES?
The Hub instantly connects you to peers who are nearby, who share your primary job role and who follow the same topics as you. It's a fun way to meet new people, expand your support network and share knowledge.
SAY HELLO TO YOUR NEW PROFILE
Your Hub profile is beautiful, sleek and customisable. Follow other members who you'd like to see more of in your personal activity feed.
MESSAGE AND CHAT
It's no secret that this sector thrives on being social. Keep up the good work through direct one-to-one messaging and group chats.
EVENTS: YOU SPOKE, WE LISTENED
You've told us again and again that you'd like to share your upcoming events and tour dates with the community. Knock yourself out!
All content is taggable by topic, allowing you to follow the things you're most interested in. Looking for job opportunities? There's a topic for that. Searching for advice on funding? There's a topic for that too. Looking for wellbeing resources? There's a... you get the idea!
Within the East Meets West Hub we'll soon be launching groups. These are public (or private) places where you can focus on specific topics or areas of work. We'll be adding groups in response to how members use the main Hub.
GET IT OFF YOUR CHEST
The Hub mainly relies on content posted and shared by our members. There's a shed-load of tools that will help you spark debate, share your biggest lessons and ask for help.
Bash out a quick post (don't forget to include photos, videos, files and links), craft a longer article (they're a bit like blog posts) or create a poll for the rest of the community.
NOTIFICATIONS JUST THE WAY YOU LIKE 'EM
You choose exactly how to receive notifications from the Hub. Email, app, web or no notifications at all. It's totally up to you. You can turn the funky sounds on or off too.
The East Meets West Network is curated by Little Earthquake (aka Team Quake).
Founded in 2005, we're a Birmingham-based theatre company led by Co-Directors Gareth Nicholls and Philip Holyman, and produced by Zoë Roberts. "Thou Shalt Not Bore" is our only commandment.
Be sure to say hello!
